FB-DIMM memory modules to fulfill high-bandwidth, high-speed and
high-capacity requirements of servers and workstations

Apacer to Display Fully Buffered DIMM Memory Module
at Computex Taipei 2005

Apacer Technology Inc. is staying ahead of the competition by displaying a Fully Buffered DIMM (FB-DIMM) memory module at Computex 2005. Apacer is committed to become a leading supplier of FB-DIMM memory modules with manufacturing in place to support the server and workstation sector’s widespread adoption of FB-DIMM memory scheduled to take off in 1H 2006.
While direct control over dies is the key advantage of the product, FB-DIMM memory modules adopt point-to-point serial signals and use 69 pins per channel for signal transfer to effectively reduce noise interference. With a theoretical bandwidth of 38.4GB and a maximum capacity of 192GB, it fulfills the high-bandwidth, high-speed and high-capacity requirements of memory modules for servers and workstations.

The FB-DIMM memory module is a perfect solution for the expansion and data transfer bandwidth constraints of DDR2 memory modules. Though it looks no different from DDR and DDR2 memory modules in appearance, the AMB (advance memory buffer) chip at the center of the module for protocol conversions utilizes serial signal transfers that reduce the number of pins for data transfer to 69 pins (compared with 240 pins for today’s DDRII memory modules) and achieve a higher theoretical bandwidth of 3.2Gbps. Also, the automatic dynamic control of dies from the AMB can optimize the read/write status of dies to solve compatibility issues among dies as well as power compatibility issues of memory expansion.

According to Grace Lo, Product Director of Apacer, “Apacer at Computex Taipei 2005 will display the FB-DIMM memory module that will be mass-produced in 2006 to show customers Apacer’s continuous devotion to product development. Whether it is the investment in production equipment, testing of new-specification memory modules or obtaining technical support from AMB chip suppliers, Apacer has a well-planned solution that will assure premium product quality and performance as well as excellent post-delivery service for our FB-DIMM memory modules.”
Server memory modules transitioning from Registered to FB-DIMM logically follow the VGA adapter bus moving from AGP8X to PCI Express and hard drive interface moving from IDE to SATA. These industry-wide specifications reflect the move from parallel signal transfer to serial signal transfer, which is the perfect solution for enhancing the bandwidth, speed and capacity of computer systems that handle huge data transfer requirements like enterprise servers and workstations.
